Energy Performance Certificates (EPC)

An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) is a certificate that indicates how much energy is being used to operate a building, which is indicated through a performance scale of A-G. Once issued the EPC is valid for 5 years.

Attaining high energy savings and sustaining them needs a combined approach – hardware, software and service working in harmony.
In 2020, The Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy has, under section 19(1)(b) of the National Energy Act, 1998 (Act no. 34 of 2008), set out regulations that an EPC is required to be publicly displayed at the entrance of all buildings that fall into the criteria for compliance. Buildings in the private sector that are over 2000m2 and buildings that are over 1000m2 in the public sector are now required to display an EPC at their entrance.

Penalties for non-compliance are defined as, a 5 million rand fine, five years imprisonment or both should an organization not comply with the legislation by the December 2025 deadline.
